Stewart, Glynn

Glynn Stewart is one of those authors who somehow manages to crank out multiple books per year while remaining interesting and entertaining. They’re never best-sellers, but they’re diverting. They’re certainly not perfect, but they’re rarely bad enough that I stop reading.

He’s written multiple SF series. I read 8 or 10 of the Starship’s Mage series before losing interest, but that was okay because there was the Duchy of Terra series to start reading. I eventually stopped reading that one, but then there was Castle Federation.

Most recently, I’ve been reading the SF series House Adamant, and have only stopped that one because no more have been released yet.

He also writes fantasy, though not nearly as much. I recently read Spirit Knight, first of a new series, and really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to the release of the next one.

His protagonists are likeable, but human, often fighting their own flaws while achieving their goals.

The one thing about his SF that I wish he’d change would be getting carried away in detailing numbers related to space combat. So many ships of this type, so many ships of that type, so many missiles of this or that type, so many shuttles, this weapon’s muzzle velocity, on and on. It tends to get far beyond the level of detail that I think he really needs to make things interesting and exciting, into “hey, look how much work I put into imagining this story” territory.

But generally those parts are easy to skim over without missing anything.

Overall, I’ll probably keep watching for new books by Glynn Stewart, and giving them a try.
